Home Insulation & Air Leaks In Your Attic
If you haven't been in your attic recently, then you may be letting costly air conditioning escape your home!
Do you have an attic in your home and is it insulated? Air leaking into your attic could be costing you more money than you realize. In most homes, up to 30% of its heating and cooling energy are lost due to air leaks and lack of insulation. These air leaks could be around plumbing pipes, light fixtures, chimneys, and other small holes around your ceiling.
A quick way to see if you need more insulation is to look across your uncovered attic floor. If the level with or below the attic floor joists, you probably need to add more insulation. The recommended level for most attics is R-38 (or about 12–15 inches). Additionally, you can stop the air leaks by sealing with acrylic latex or silicone caulk, depending on the size of the gap. It’s also important to weatherstrip the attic access door to prevent any major leaks there.
