Avoid Plumbing Problems This Summer
Summers in Arizona are hot and dry, but that doesn’t rule out water problems. Don't run into any plumbing problems at your next get together.
Your plumbing can be susceptible to unique issues during the summer months due to excessive use or other factors. No one wants to have a plumbing emergency any time of year. Here are some of the most common summertime plumbing problems and how to avoid them at your home.
Underground Plumbing Pipe Damage
During the summer months, many outdoor projects may be underway. You may be planning a new landscape design or installing a new driveway that can require heavy equipment or digging at your home.
These outdoor projects can enhance your property, but they can also damage underground plumbing. Before you begin your next outdoor project, keep in mind you need to avoid damaging your water, sewer and irrigation pipes.
Most homes have a main sewer and water line that run under their yard. They may also have underground irrigation pipes. Driving vehicles or heavy equipment over these pipes can cause cracking or damage to the pipes, leading to leaks and backups. Digging can also damage underground pipes.
Make sure to identify where any underground plumbing is before you begin projects around your home. If a pipe is damaged, it can require digging up the pipe and your lawn to repair or replace the pipe, an expensive and disruptive process.
Another cause of underground sewer line and water pipe damage is tree root invasion. If you have trees or shrubs planted in your yard, their roots will search for sources of moisture.
Your underground pipes can be inviting to roots and these invasive roots can find their way inside pipes. Roots can cause clogs and pipe damage – if you notice wet spots or greener grass in one area of your lawn, you could have a leak that needs to be repaired.
Make sure to avoid future root invasion issues by planting trees and shrubs far away from underground plumbing.
Outdoor Plumbing Issues
Do you have irrigation, an outdoor kitchen or an outdoor shower? Summertime means you will be using your outdoor plumbing fixtures more and there is a higher chance of plumbing problems.
Keep in mind your outdoor plumbing fixtures may need maintenance and repairs more often – exposure to the elements can lead to clogged drains and damaged components.
Keep an eye on your outdoor plumbing to address clogs, leaks and other common plumbing problems quickly before they become larger, more expensive issues.
Kitchen Sink Problems
Most families have parties and gatherings during the summer months, preparing fresh food to enjoy with friends and family. The kitchen sink can get a workout, handling all the cleaning and preparation for these festive meals.
The garbage disposal, in particular, can be overworked, grinding up peelings and produce that can wear out blades and motor components. Plus, fibrous fruits and vegetables can lead to clogs in the kitchen sink and in drainpipes.
To avoid garbage disposal breakdowns and kitchen sink clogs, be careful what you put down your kitchen drain. Start a compost for food scraps to reduce the amount of produce that is processed through your garbage disposal.
Also avoid disposing of coffee grounds, eggshells and any type of fats or grease down your kitchen sink drain to avoid nasty clogs!
Toilets can overflow or become clogged any time of year but summertime has its own challenges. Often, kids are home more and tend to be less careful of what they flush down the toilet.
Toys, washcloths and many other items can end up in the toilet and be flushed down into your sewer pipes. These items can cause a clog in the interior plumbing or in your main sewer line, leading to sewage backups into your home.
While you cannot watch the kids every minute of every day, make sure you explain what can and cannot be flushed down the toilet.
Just because an item fits, does not mean it will not cause a clog further down in the plumbing. Make sure kids know that nothing besides toilet paper and waste should be flushed – this includes cotton balls, cotton swabs and other common hygiene items that are kept in the bathroom.
